In the 21st century it is hard to imagine the economy of Hungary without the application of radioisotopes and nuclear technologies. Nuclear technologies are applied in the industry, medicine, and it has a significant contribution to the electricity production: one-third of Hungary's electricity consumption is provided by the Paks Nuclear Power Plant at a reasonable price.
The use of nuclear energy also requires from society to face certain issues and find solutions. This recognition resulted in the Hungarian Parliament to create the Atomic Energy Act of Hungary in 1996 (Act CXVI. of 1996), according to which radioactive waste disposal, interim storage of spent fuel, the closing of the nuclear fuel cycle and the decommissioning of nuclear facilities is the responsibility of a body appointed by the Government. Therefore on the 2nd of June, 1998 the Radioactive Waste Management Non-profit Company was established, which became the Public Limited Company for Radioactive Waste Management (PURAM) on the 7th of January, 2008 in order to comply with EU regulations on company forms.
The most important technical tasks of the upcoming years are the following: the operation and expansion of the National Radioactive Waste Repository and the Spent Fuel Interim Storage Facility; the safety enhancement of the Waste Treatment and Disposal Facility (which entails the capacity increase of the facility as well); and the site selection for the final disposal Facility for spent nuclear fuel and high activity radioactive waste. Establishing and maintaining good relationship with society is also a high priority task. As we have learnt in previous years, one of the most important aspects of radioactive waste management is open communication with the public. In previous years we have striven to ensure transparency and maintain dialogue and good relationships. We are committed to transparent communications and open discussion with the public with the involvement of all stakeholders. Our primary goal is to create an environment for stakeholders where decisions are made.
According to the Atomic Energy Act of Hungary, our company is responsible for designing and performing its activities:
in a way than ensures safety at all times;
without any negative effects on human health and the environment, namely not to exceed any national or international limits set for radioactive releases.
The company accepts 'legal ownership' for solving the final disposal issue of radioactive waste, interim storage of spent fuel, closing the nuclear fuel cycle and decommissioning nuclear facilities. We are aware that having ownership in itself does not solve our issues, however we can declare that roles have been assigned according to a well-defined framework to proceed purposefully. The activities of our company remain independent from any political or business interests. Our task is to adhere to the applicable regulations and the most rigorous scientific, technical and other requirements. Our hope is to be an open and accessible company to all.
The state-of-the-art solutions for our activities contribute significantly to a more transparent, therefore more accepted nuclear applications, as it is clear who is responsible for what and at what cost. This approach also supports that those experts who are involved in the application of nuclear energy think and act responsibly in order to protect future generations and the environment, and to reduce their burdens.
The aim for our website is to provide a clear picture on the tasks of PURAM, as well as to provide background information on our company's financial and organisational structure. We recommend this website for those whose work might involve in some aspect radioactive waste management or spent fuel management, or who are just interested in this controversial field, and the challenges that we face.
For those who wish to know more, our company is always at your assistance. We honestly hope that our homepage is worthy of your attention.
